I was going through Aunty Nimu’s website (www.auntynimu.com) and I realized that as a generation, we have been sleeping on healthy living. I am saying this not to sound any better but to heighten the fact that we need to do better when it comes to taking care of our gut, mind, body and soul. We need to be mindful of what we consume, and that has nothing to do with money.
On her Instagram stories poll, she let us in on how she defines guilt-free foods and their importance on our general wellbeing. In a nutshell, these are foods that nourish your gut, mind, body and soul and make you feel good about yourself after the consumption. You realize that sometimes you indulge in foods such as a moist piece of yummy cake but feel so guilty after taking the last bite. That is what guilt-filled eating feels like. Again, if you are trying to lose weight or generally leaning towards living a health-conscious lifestyle, check out the 5 substitutes below;
1. Honey in place of Processed Sugar
Sugar has so many negative effects on one’s general health. To start with, it is high in calories, which means that if you are trying to keep your caloric intake on the low, then you need to avoid processed sugar by all means. Processed sugar is also bad for your teeth and is the number one cause of feminine health issues when it comes to women. Instead of having a tasteless cup of tea that will make you crave sugar, add a spoonful of honey to your drink and enjoy. In addition, fruits have natural sugars and these can come in handy when you have a sweet tooth.
2. Natural Oils in place of Processed Cooking oil
Most of these processed cooking oils are rich in cholesterol, which is harmful your heart. Continuous use of such may pose as a threat to your health. These also have a high caloric count and are not recommended especially if you are trying to lose or maintain weight. Instead of using processed cooking oil, replace them with natural oils such as coconut oil or castor oil.
3. Homemade Juice in place of Soda and Canned Juice
I love a fresh blend of chilled homemade juice since I know exactly what is in there and in what amounts. My worry with purchasing canned juice is the fact that it has so many chemicals in the name of sweeteners and preservatives. If you are trying to live a healthier lifestyle, then invest in a good blender then buy fruits and greens and blend them at the comfort of your home. Also, this is definitely a cheaper alternative in the long run.
4. A fruity frozen Yoghurt bowl in place of Ice Cream
When you are craving something sweet, creamy and chilled, the first thing you and I tend to reach for is definitely ice cream. Am I allowed to put it out there that I mostly tend to crave for ice cream during chilly weather like the one we have right now? Well, there you have it. Instead of reaching of ice cream, make yourself a bowl of fruits mixed with yoghurt and let it freeze. It is not only yummy but also healthier.
5. Baked Chicken instead of Fried Chicken
There comes a time when all we want to do is devour a crunchy piece of spicy chicken. This takes us to imagine of all the junk food we haven’t tasted in a while. Instead of punishing yourself by forcing yourself to stay away from foods that make you salivate, treat yourself to a healthier version of the same food. Since fried chicken has higher levels of fat, go ahead and have a baked version of the same chicken.
