10 Simple ways to be happier in real life

They say that when life gives you lemons, make lemonade out of it. Well, this phrase can sometimes be easier said than done because when you are so used to being unhappy, you tend to get used to that as your new normal. I would love to tell each and every single person reading this that you are meant to be happy and to have an amazing life. I actually got that phrase from Sharon Mundia and I literally live by that.
Nonetheless, happiness is something that one cannot have at 100 at all times. It fluctuates based on so many factors and that is totally okay. However, there a few things that one can do to ensure that the cup never topples. Below are 10 simple ways that one can be happier in real life:

1. Cut down on your Social media screen time

In the current generation and time, we tend to spend so much time on our phones or laptops consuming content from social media platforms such as Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and Tiktok. Social media usually gives the illusion of perfect lives being portrayed, making you to feel like you are the only one missing out on the good life.

2. Define your ‘Why’

When you are stuck living life that seems to have no purpose or direction, you tend to be unhappy because you will not have the drive or the push for each new day. When you define your why, you will know exactly what you were put on this earth to do and that will give you the motivation and direction you need in life, which will ultimately make you happier.

3. Help other people

There is something therapeutic about helping those in need in the society. You can never be less important for charity. Play your role, however little it is. It goes a long way.

4. Make peace with your past

I realized that the more I held onto my past, the less forgiving I become, the angrier I become which ultimately makes me unhappy. For me to move forward in life, I always have to make peace with my past. It usually is a very painful experience for me, so I am usually patient with myself during this process. The good thing is that once I am done, nothing about my past can make me unhappy.

5. Practice gratitude

We tend to overlook the things we are blessed to have and focus on the tiny things that steal our joy. It is very important to notice the things you are grateful for. This will make you realize that you are actually more blessed than you think you are.

6. Spend time with people who bring you joy

The people you surround yourself with can have a huge impact on your mood and self-esteem. It is advisable that you stay away from people that make you feel sad or bad about yourself. Go ahead and spend more time with those that bring you joy.

7. Stand up for yourself

You need to realize that you only have yourself. That means that you should not expect others to always be there for you. Know your worth and don’t let people treat you otherwise.

8. Practice positive affirmations

This is a simple way to speak to yourself in a positive way. Saying things like ‘I am confident’ and ‘I am smart’ will eventually have a positive effect to your wellbeing since you will always be reminding yourself of all these positive things.

9. Be yourself

There is nothing sadder than trying to be someone else when you have the choice of being yourself. You need to realize that there is no one quite like you. Own that and be unapologetically you.

10. Accept your flaws

Sometimes, people try to bring you down by pointing out your flaws. Accepting your flaws takes that power from them and puts it in your hands.
